This painting is the result of several factors:- I was set a project by my tutor at the time, to paint a large piece in small squares in a pixillated style. Nearing the end of 2016 Parliament were voting on whether to bomb in Syria, and my mother was dying. I felt so moved I wanted to send some love and peace to such a war-torn area of the world, and I especially felt keenly for the women and children. For them it didn’t matter who was bombing them, they were suffering regardless. We had the appalling pictures on the news of children and adults washed up dead on the beaches in Greece, and along with thousands of others, I felt so helpless in the face of such a tragedy. I used the image of the Peace rose, and soft colours to send love and peace to those suffering. I also was amazed at the positive images I found whilst researching, of children in the refugee camps smiling despite it all. This painting feels as pertinent nearly two years on as it did when I painted it.
