THE DRESS LASTED LONGER THAN THE MARRIAGE – OK a mouthful of a title, but for me the one that fits. Part of the Emergence series and a joyful, exciting one to work with.
This young woman, emerging from a long divorce process, recycles her wedding dress into a new creation, complete with newspaper dyed roses! She models the dress in the WOW fashion show as part of their mission to create beautiful clothes from waste materials, charity shop finds, packaging and clothes that have had another life already.
The dress became symbolic of the move into a new strength and power; an emergence from the shadow of a difficult period in life; how we can transform both ourselves and our environment. I also painted this on a previous painting, which shows through and became an important component of the piece. The little faces are the children, the family, the wider community who are also affected when a long term relationship ends.
