1902 BEGINNING THE JOURNEY

Description

Beginning The Journey – part of the new Emergence Series, which explores transformation, rites of passage, emergence into and out of situations and phases in life.  In this painting, inspired by Gustave Klimt, I have sought to show two teenage girls beginning their journey into womanhood.  The one still dreamy, the other more worldly, looking at an uncertain world and their place in it, with excitement and some trepidation.

The techniques used in this series allow for a more intuitive way of working, which has moments of surprise and serendipity – symbols appear and I bring them more into form; colours suggest themselves; the piece takes on a life of it’s own.  The mood as I painted this piece was joyful and it remains one of my favourites.
